MTD is HMRC's move to digital tax records and quarterly updates. Here's what it means for UK sole traders, landlords and small businesses, and how Berified keeps you ready.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a UK government programme that asks you to keep your records digitally and report to HMRC using compatible software, instead of a once-a-year manual return. It already applies to VAT, and it is being extended to Income Tax.
If your business is VAT-registered, MTD for VAT already applies. You keep digital VAT records and file your returns through MTD-compatible software. Berified keeps your VAT records in the right format and prepares your return so it is ready to file.
MTD for Income Tax is being rolled out in stages, based on your qualifying income (broadly, your gross income from self-employment and property before expenses):
You'll need MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026.
You'll need MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2027.
You'll need MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2028.
Once you're in, you keep digital records and send HMRC a quarterly summary of your income and expenses, then a final declaration after the tax year ends.
Berified keeps your records digital from the start and your VAT and income figures ready all year, so preparing your quarterly updates and returns is quick. You stay in control, and you file.
